Tokyo has seen a surge in coronavirus cases in recent days, recording its highest number of new cases in 6 months just last week. Japan has done well to escape the worst of the pandemic although the virus remains a very real threat throughout the country. For months, prominent Japanese doctors have been calling for the Games to be cancelled and almost 500,000 people have signed an online petition demanding the same.
